In this article I am going to give you some tips on how to best market IT products.

Let’s remember one more time that the ultimate object of marketing is sales. IT product marketing is not just about coverage or getting seen. IT product sales are all about setting targets as well as measuring results. Below are few tips on how to market an IT product online to increase sales and raise profit.

  1. Research your market

There are three ways to understand your market: data, customer research and more customer survey:

Data use real data to understand your market and how you can fit your IT product into the most profitable areas of your target market.

Customer focus groups Use intelligent customer questions based on prospects’ behavior and purchasing a focus group to get insights into your customers’ needs and buying behavior.

Customer surveys in order to have a realistic picture with informative statistical data analysis of your target market, you need large number of people to provide. For example at Helios we are currently helping one client get highly detailed and personal feedback from 10,000 of the hardest to reach consumers in the UK and Italy. Most other marketing agencies turned them down saying it couldn’t be done, but if you ask the right questions in the right way, the survey will have a powerful effect.

2.     How to get customers: research your sector

Sometimes IT companies or their partners are so passionate about their products that their heads are buried in their own tech and forget to look at the world around them. You need to get online and understand what your competitors are doing. Investigate what similar IT retailers are doing in your area; dedicate time to reading journals and articles relating to your specific sector, and make sure you include blogs from areas outside your core business. Use Google alerts to search for key terms in your sector and subscribe or automatically email you this intelligence.

3.     How to get more customers: understand customer buying trends

As I said before, do you research, investigate what your target customers are buying today. This will allow you to understand what they will buy tomorrow. This is especially important if your IT product has a long lead time.

4.     How to market an IT product: get a marketing plan

Don’t just be tempted by the latest marketing fad or by the most recent marketing agency that is not specialized in IT. Chose a marketing company that operates in the IT industry only and that knows this niche very well, develop a plan with them, run it for a set period and measure your results.

In the next article we will discuss the sales side of marketing plan for IT products
