Europe, 75% internet penetration: world’s no 1

ITU, International Telecommunication Union is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies – ICTs.  The Organization is based on the partnership between private and public sectors and do date counts over 700 private companies spread in 193 countries globally. From its headquarters in Geneva publishes statistics papers on the ICT sector which are extremely useful to understand the current trends of the market and, more importantly, to forecast the future ones.

Amongst the many publications (the majority are downloadable from the website) what I would like to share with you is ICT FACTS AND FIGURES 2013 which we have used at Helios to structure a marketing strategy for a ICT partner who wanted to gain new market share selling Internet based services.

The paper has a wealth of extremely interesting information but for the purpose of this blog’s entry, I would like to highlight just some key elements of it.

  • 2.7 billion people – almost 40% of the world’s population – are online

In developing countries, 16% fewer women than men use the Internet

  • 750 million households – 41% globally –connected to the internet
  • Europe is the region with the highest Internet penetration rate in the world (75%), followed by the Americas (61%).

Just by looking at the last bullet point it comes extremely clear that the vast majority of the population in Europe uses internet both in their private or professional life. The penetration rate of 75% indicates that the various providers will fight to amongst each other’s to gain new market share driving, inevitably, the price of the services down. At first sight all this could look too much top line for a small size company who operates into the ICT sector and I am sure that many of you are actually asking yourselves if there is any value for you in the information. Actually there is: just focus on the fact that the concentration of such big audience on one platform, like internet, modifies the behaviour of the market. We see this in our everyday life when we need any kind of service or product the first thing we do is to go on the net to take a look at what is out there. The same is now happening for ICT projects that other SMB (PMI) might have already budgeted for spend. In this scenario is crucial for any ICT partner to have a presence on the internet not only with its website, but in a multichannel fashion like the social media and specialised sites on their target market.

The illusionist Mariano Tomatis has published this video on his website. The video is gone viral quite rightly achieving so far in excess of 670K clicks on You Tube. Can anyone explain this trick?

Nuove Prospettive
